The Best Thing About Being An Author

A few weeks ago a friend of mind said she heard in an interview with a top selling author that the best part about writing is that they have their own private friends. So my friend immediately came to the conclusion that all of us writers felt the same. Although I can see where the author was coming from, I have to disagree. Yes, when writing a book you create characters that take on a life of their own. Over time you become familiar with their individual personalities and struggles. As a writer, like the reader, you may even forget the characters on the paper are fictional. This often results in the writer staying glued to their typewriter, notebook, laptop or desktop in order to stay connected to those characters - kind of like picking up the phone and calling your friends. It is nice to have people to go to who (whether they are real or not) can't upset you without your permission.

As nice as that is, I believe the best thing about being a writer is having the ability to never run out of a good book. We do not suffer the disappointment of picking up a book, neglecting our daily commitments for a couple of days to find out the story did not go as we had hoped. Why do that when there is real life to do that for you?

Writing gives me a place to escape to when I need a break from the stress of everyday. I can visit new places, see new experiences through someone else's eyes. I can be compassionate, whimsical or float on the cloud with new love. I can encourage someone to take a risk and give up everything and know it will all turn out in the end. At the end of the story I know I will be satisfied from the beginning, through the middle to the end, because there will always be that element of endless drama. Hey. I'm an Aries. I thrive on drama and have plenty of it to share. : )
